“In my film works the main focus is on impermanence, transience, and ideas of change, shifts and ‘repositioning’. Landscape and architecture that appear to be solid and permanent is experienced unstable and disorienting. In Travelling Fields I am particularly interested in the idea of geography and how it can be examined and visually reworked in the dimension of altered time and filmic space. In this work I continue to work with shifts in perspective and working with the specific qualities it produces in the image. These qualities are results of certain ways of framing and the parallax movements produced by the travelling camera. It includes architectural elements and different ground surfaces in the Murmansk region, Kola Peninsula, Russia.” (ILH)

“blue mantle was shot along the Massachusetts coast. Images include paintings by Winslow Homer and illustrations from Harper’s Weekly accounts of disasters and rescues at sea. The main musical sources are Debussy’s La mer, Wagner’s The Flying Dutchmanand ‘Lowlands’, a sea shanty. Texts range from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to Thoreau to Melville. The only cinematic representations supplementing my own footage are Edison’s 1900 A Storm at Sea and a model-size Eidophusikon (a precinematic 18th-century theatrical spectacle described in its day as ‘moving pictures, representing phenomena of nature’). The 40 miles of sea between Chatham and Provincetown came to be called an ocean graveyard due to the thousands of wrecks that occurred there during a time when sea-going vessels were the primary means for “bringing man nearer unto man” (Longfellow).” (RM)

Working in the vein of Wittgenstein’s and Burrough’s investigations into the enigma of language, it challenges the viewer with its voluntarily unpleasant yet formally intruiging plasticity; and also questions preconceived notions of animation and audio-visual grammar in a larger sense. Via perceptual tricks, formal games and semiotic puns, the films in this programme look at how we make sense of the world.

Where Becky James’ I Hate You Don’t Touch Me or Bat and Hat looks at to what extent we define ourselves by objects and symbols, both The Object Which Thinks Us: Object 1 (Samantha Rebello) and Sophie Michael’s Untitled (Objects 3) examine objects themselves with a certain detachment, regarding them afresh, asking us to do the same. And, whilst Charlotte Pryce’s beautiful new film The Parable of the Tulip Painter and the Fly concerns itself with natural forms, the camera’s usually cold gaze overcome by a reverie, it too renders the commplace alien.

"...One of the more abstract components of the festival, The Anagogic Chamber, suffered to an extent as many ideas and techniques presented referenced established 20^th century practices without developing upon the overall schema. An exception to this was Samantha Rebello’s powerful short, The Object Which Thinks Us, a disorientating representation of everyday household objects as refracted through distorted perception (tight close ups, sometimes out of focus). The soundtrack develops upon the uncanny nature of these representations by incorporating short snippets of unidentifiable audio protruded from elongated silence in a manner similar to the early violent audio art of Swiss experimentalists Schimpfluch Gruppe. When the objects themselves became apparent – a collection of everyday hygiene; toothbrushes, blood in water – the unusual atmosphere does not dissipate as the symbiotic relationship between visuals and audio establishes itself a foreign territory in which one was deeply immersed. Straddling the line between the comical and the creepy, Rebello’s use of space (silence) and event (revelation) was in perfect ratio to catapult these humble familiarities into an unsettling world, and highlights the work of an exceptional artist in control of her chosen themes and techniques."

Tactile sensation through the eyes and ears.
It could be said that the film explores the relationship between
sound and image, though in this case they are less sounds
and images than they are surfaces and textures across
which the eye and ear can graze. What you see and hear are
an 'amplification' of the surfaces of 'dead' things:
horse-hair, cat-gut, shells and bones.
